Fixed Braces
Fixed braces produce the most precise results as they are constantly moving teeth to the desired position. While orthodontic treatment does last over a year, it creates results that will last for a lifetime.
Fixed braces consist of metal brackets that are attached to the front surface of the teeth and thin metal wires held in place with elastics. Brackets are now generally smaller than they once were and can also be customised with coloured elastics. More discreet fixed braces are also available, featuring ceramic brackets and tooth-coloured wires.
Why have fixed braces:
- Produces precise, reliable results, even for complex cases
- Smaller, more comfortable brackets than before
- Ceramic, tooth-coloured options available for a discreet look
What does the treatment involve?
Making space
If your teeth are overcrowded, it may be necessary to remove one or more teeth prior to fitting, or insert bands to create sufficient gaps.
Fitting the brackets
After your teeth have been cleaned and dried, brackets are fixed in place with a strong dental adhesive and the wires attached.
Moving your teeth
The wire is shaped to encourage the teeth to move, and as it slowly returns to its original shape, it pulls the teeth with it.
Regular adjustments
Adjustments are needed every 4-6 weeks. Treatment normally takes 12-24 months, followed by a retainer to keep teeth in their new position.
What to expect during treatment
Some people experience a little discomfort during orthodontic treatment, particularly in the first few days after fitting or following a tightening appointment. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can ease any soreness, and it may help to stick to a soft diet during this time.
